Devblog #39: A Foundation for Tomorrow

For five entire months straight our developers have worked and toiled to bring about a massive rework in the functionality of Thrive's background processes. A massive undertaking that has left nothing untouched, and everything entirely different. This is without a doubt a fundamental change in the underlying rules of reality in the world of Thrive; A brand new physics engine complete with better performance. Nothing will quite feel the same as it once did, but it's still Thrive, and it …

This week we are proud to announce the launch of our public release candidate. A stand-alone build that allows the public to test our latest release… before it's official release. Note that this is a bit different from our alpha build release, which was far less stable and undeniably broken.
We have just one more week before the official release of 0.6.4 finally makes it out to public. It's been a long time coming, so keep an eye out for it on the 9th of December.
We are…

We've been getting a lot done this week with all efforts focused on smoothing out all the kinks and bugs that have resulted from our refactor. The microbe stage is once again in a largely playable state, but there are still many more bugs hiding in the fringes of Thrive. We have already surpassed our original planned release date for this update, and are now entering overtime to get the smoothest release possible.
In order to get things done right, we have decided to call on you…

This week our lead programmer has called for all hands on deck to assist with hunting down all of the resulting bugs , crashes, and other complicating matters that have come about due to the recent code refactor. With the physics system having pretty much been rebuilt from the ground up, everything that relied on it has fundamentally changed and now requires checking on.
Unfortunately, we do not feel that this version of Thrive will be ready to release until we can successf…

Great progress has been reached in the refactoring efforts, and we were finally comfortable enough with the refactor to merge the changes into Thrive proper. There is still a lot to be done however, and while the game is in a playable state again, there is still a great deal of polish and reimplementation that needs to occur.
Some major features such as the ability to save, and microbe colonies are still unconverted and do not function. And there may be a new wave of bugs and crashe…

Regrettably we do not have any new features to show off this week, nor a BOTD for our patreons. Rest assured we are still making great progress with the now-merged refactoring changes to Thrive! We are no longer having significant issues with our Windows build, and are making good progress with the reimplementation of essential features post-refactoring.
The current great hurdle our programming lead is facing is setting up our native library tools, which has been causing them no sma…

We have an exciting new expansion to the Thriveopedia; The organelle pages! This category will avail players with everything they need to know about each individual cell component. Pages will include basic details on the part's function, guides and strategies on how to make good use of them, and even summaries of their real-life counterparts and how they really work!
The refactor effort is still going strong this week, now with functional updated collision shapes for our microbes. T…

The refactor saga continues, now with a mostly functional microbe stage running with the newly rewritten physics processes. It's still very much rough around the edges, but good progress has been made, and we are confident that the refactor will be done before the end of the year.
In other news, we will now have the option to play the early multicellular stage in freebuild mode. You'll finally be building the biggest baddest clump of cells in the pond, while vibing to the new biome-…

The microbe stage refactoring to improve the game performance is starting to near the finish line now. A pull request has been finally opened for it with the hope being that it can be merged in the coming weeks. After that once we have the game stable enough already to play, we'll announce the release date for 0.6.4.
The Thriveopedia is getting more content added to it soon. This next set of content includes pages describing the various organelles in the game. Along with other a…

This has been another productive week for our programming team, with a fresh host of bugfixes and UI improvements bringing further stability to Thrive. Not only is our beloved microbe stage going to run so much more smoothly, but the early multicellular stage will finally be fairly stable as well.
The refactor is still ongoing, but our lead programmer has made great progress converting a majority of the microbe code to the new system. Once done, the early multicellular stage will ne…
