Devblog #43: Meshes and Miches

Continuing the momentum from our previous update, many new features have been added to Thrive which will enrich the player experience. Symbolizing another monumental step forward towards a complete Microbe Stage, we present to you Thrive 0.7.0!
This release marks the completion of the 0.6.x roadmap. For this release the major features are a new auto-evo algorithm based on miches that should generate much better AI species, and a convolution surface algorithm which gives macroscopic …

It's the final week before the release of 0.7.0 and we have now entered feature-freeze. This means that all further development efforts are now aimed at bugfixes and polishing of the new features, and by golly there are a lot of them! In this week alone we have finally implemented both the long-anticipated auto-evo rework, and the equally long-anticipated 3D organism mesh generation.
Excited about these new features and just can't wait one more week to give them a spin? Worry not! W…

Once again we are met with a reasonably productive week as our talented team continues to churn out much-needed improvements and additions to Thrive. Among the latest changes; the finalization of our long-awaited sprinting feature and comparatively smarter movement handling for AI. They no longer only move directly forward, so watch out for strafing predators! There has also been some incredible work going on behind the scenes, which you can get a sneak-peak of in the sections below.

This week we've had a lot of great progress in a variety of features, as well as some bug fixes that will make the game play out much more smoothly for everyone. The most notable change is that players on easy mode will now be able to continue playing the game post-extinction if they happened to make some bad choices, by living on through a conveniently present closely related species.
We have just three more weeks until the release of 0.7.0, so look folks can look forward to even m…

The backlog of features created by our beloved volunteers has finally been worked through by our lead programmer, meaning that the latest devbuild will now be packed with a new set of gameplay features and quality changes for our patrons. Coming up next, our developers have made excellent progress on a new experimental autoevo system, which if all things continue to go well, will hopefully make it into the coming release.
We are proud to announce that thanks to all the progress we a…

Our lead programmer has returned from their vacation, which means that progress shall resume at it's normal pace. All of the work done by our volunteers over the past few weeks has finally been approved and merged into the game, which means we finally have a new devbuild that will show off a good collection of new features and changes. This devbuild alone could have been a major release in the old days!
Our work has just resumed, so keep your eyes out for our next progress update!

Volunteer efforts have slowed down a bit this week compared to the initial further just last month, though the occasional discussion still pops up in our developer chatroom. Unfortunately this means there is not too much to show off this week.

Progress Update 07/13/2024
Another week, and more progress! One of our newer members of the team has been tackling the visual clarity issues with the compound cloud shaders, with promising results! Unfortunately, not much else is going on save for the very same on-going projects that were elaborated upon last week such as the auto-evo algorithm and thus there is little else to report.
See you next week!

- Some ongoing experiments with restoring compound cloud visibility

This week things have quieted down a bit as our team members remain focused on their own select tasks. A new feature for rustycyanin is in the works which will bring more flavor and unique gameplay to one of the more popular diets, as well as further progress on the miche system prototype for auto-evo.
For those who may have missed it last week, you can still grab Thrive for 20% off on steam.
- Development has begun on a new gameplay mechanic for rustycyanin; The siderop…
Progress Update 06/29/2024
Despite the absence of our lead programmer, much has been accomplished this week thanks to our volunteer team stepping up like the heroes they most certainly are. With a total of 7 new open pull requests, and much in the way of experimental features and discussion.
With the state of gameplay now coming under serious scrutiny from the dev team, we would really like to know how our players feel about the state of the game. If you have a moment to spare, one of our members of the desig…
